December Minister’s Musings

I don’t know exactly what it is about the holiday season that leads me to yearn for quiet and reflection. Maybe it’s the long lines, the traffic, and the commercialization of a time of year that is supposed to be about love, hope, and peace.

Whatever the reason, during the holidays I invariably find myself drawn to meditative words that help me slow down, breathe, and reflect on what matters most in my life rather than always getting caught up in the rush for more.

This fall I taught a class about the great mystic and spiritual teacher, Howard Thurman. Here are some words from a meditation of Dr. Thurman’s called “A Season of Affirmation” that always remind me of the true meaning of the holiday season and that speak to what stirs in my heart this time of year.

I affirm my faith in the little graces of life I affirm my confidence in the dignity of all humankind I affirm my joy in the experience of living I affirm my need for others I affirm my hunger for fulfillment, understanding, and peace.

Friends, as you experience the rush and busyness of the holidays, I hope you find time to remember and affirm what matters most in your lives. May the season give you space for quiet, for rest, and for the joy and beauty of family, of friendship, and of love.

Have a Blessed Holiday.

Rev. Tim
