All of Us Together is Better than One of Us Alone

Pam Lightner

On Wednesday night September 10, a number of church members gathered for the sharing of our first “Stone Soup” meal of the church year. Little did we know that several of us would stay after a delicious meal to reenact the original European folk tale of “ Stone Soup”.

A charming little girl named “ Ellie” (Bruce Raymer’s granddaughter) brilliantly played the role of a hungry new arrival into a village where she suggested making a soup made with stones. Our remaining church members each enthusiastically portrayed the self-preserving villagers who initially refused to contribute their meager food supply. With ad-libbed performances and props in hand, Ellie managed to encourage each member to abandon their excuses and contribute to the ever growing cauldron of liquid. What resulted was a delicious pot of vegetable soup which was eventually shared by everyone.

The story of “ Stone Soup” metaphorically represents the benefit of sharing. “All of us together is better than one of us alone” is its theme. No matter how small the contribution, the power of collective intelligence and teamwork results in outcomes far greater than what any one person could achieve. Keep the wisdom of “ Stone Soup” in your heart and your head and definitely come next time to experience it for yourself!

Continuing that Stone Soup appeal, our October 8 Stone Soup meal of homemade grilled cheese and tomato soup, helped raise some needed funds for the food gift cards will give out to those in need. Carol Dobbins donated 25 of her beautiful hand crafted ceramic soup bowls and for a donation you could have your soup served in your very one beautiful bowl.  We raised over $500 towards those cards.

Join us on that second Wednesday of each month. The food is delicious (Rev Josh is an excellent cook!) and the fellowship is priceless.
