The Blue Zones and Healthy Recipes
For those who are not familiar with the Blue Zones they refer to specific regions around the world where people live significantly longer and healthier lives compared to the global average. These areas have drawn the attention of researchers and health experts due to their high concentrations of centenarians (people who live to 100 or older) and the relatively low rates of age-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
One common factor is that people who live in the Blue Zones regions all eat a plant-based diet rich in whole foods, vegetables, legumes, and healthy fats. While not strictly vegetarians, for the most part, they raise and eat the animals who live and thrive in their region.
At this time of year, when we are sharing the bounty of our personal and community gardens the Blue Zones Recipes can be of special interest as there are plenty that will work with what we are growing in our local gardens. Lastly, if you have a Netflix subscription or know someone who does, consider watching, Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones docuseries which takes viewers around the world to investigate the diet and lifestyles of those living the longest lives.
