| Well right about now, as we begin February, is the time that experts say that most of us have officially, if not consciously, given up on our New Year’s resolutions. Oh, I kid myself sometimes through the end of the month of February, but practically speaking it is over. If I haven’t made it to the gym by now, will I ever? One of my New Year’s resolutions that I am struggling to keep these days is a regular spiritual practice. Between the moving and the unpacking and the new jobs and getting married, I noticed that the first thing to go was my chanting in the morning. There is an old yarn allegedly from Martin Luther. He said that he prayed for an hour every morning, except on the days when he was worried or stressed out about something. On those days he prayed for two hours!I am finding that as inspiring as Luther can be, he sets a high bar. One that I struggle to achieve, which leads to frustration. I get tempted to give up when I inevitably fail to meet my own sky-high standards. Fortunately, Buddha is a bit more forgiving that Luther. In learning meditation, we learn that it is all about coming back to the breath when our mind wanders away. At a broader level, when life meanders away, a regular spiritual practice helps us to get back on track with our vision for how we want our lives to be. So don’t feel bad or guilty! Remember that vision for yourself that lead to the resolution. And if you get knocked off the path; breath, smile, and return again. May You Be Blessed Always,Rev. Dr. Josh Snyder |
