Covenant is a theological term that is often used to describe relationships. Some of these relationships include between church members, between the UUA and congregations, even at times between humanity and God. Article II of the UUA bylaws uses the term “covenant” frequently, and perhaps at times in ways that may not be familiar. There is a long, and celebrated history behind “Covenant.”

This class is a sort of “biography of an idea.” We will start in Ancient and Biblical times to find the roots of covenant. Using Alice Blair Wesley’s 2000 Minn’s lectures on the Free Church Tradition as a sort of spirit guide, we will examine some of the thinkers and events that have shaped contemporary UU views of covenant. This includes but is not limited to: The Cambridge Platform, the founding of the church in Dedham Mass, Henry Whitney Bellows, James Luther Adams, Henry Nelson Wieman, Conrad Wright,
the Empowerment Controversy, the Seven Principles, the 1998 Commission on Appraisal “Interdependence,” and then finally we will be able to read Article II again with the “fresh” eyes of history.

Through story, chant and imagery, Rise Up presents a textured spiritual inquiry often missing from exclusively male imaged, monotheistic belief systems. Join us on this amazing journey.  Class is limited to 17 participants.  Open only to women (and those who identify as women.) Cost is $10 to help cover materials.
